Applications for AAU International Fellowships for Graduate and Postgraduate Studies in the United States are now being accepted from qualified and exceptional candidates. This Fellowship is awarded based on academic achievement and demonstrated dedication to women and girls.

The program provides financial assistance to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents who want to return to their native country to pursue a professional career while pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States.

AAU International Fellowships for Graduates | DETAILS

International Fellowships have existed since 1917. A limited number of grants are available for study outside the United States (except the applicant’s home country) to women who are members of Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates). Graduate and postgraduate study at recognized US schools are both funded.

Applicants must have obtained the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the United States by the application deadline and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study at the time of application. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement and demonstrated dedication to women and girls.

Recipients return to their native countries to become leaders in industry, government, academia, community action, the arts, or science.

Eligibility requirements.

To be eligible for AAU International Fellowships for Graduate and Postgraduate Students, applicants must complete the following requirements:

  • Have citizenship in a country other than the United States or be in possession of a non-immigrant visa if resident in the United States. Women who are presently or expect to be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or dual citizen of the United States and another nation are ineligible.
  • Hold an academic degree (earned in the United States or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by November 15, 2022.
  • During the fellowship year, they intend to devote themselves full-time to the proposed academic plan.
    They intend to return to their home country after finishing their studies to pursue a professional job.
  • Be fluent in English and establish competence by submitting one of the Required Components (see below), which include specified English proficiency exams, transcripts from English-speaking institutions, or a written statement confirming English is the applicant’s native language.
  • Applicants who intend to take one of the authorized English proficiency exams should schedule and take the test as soon as feasible. Please direct any questions about the testing to the test provider.
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must have applied to an accredited institution of study for the duration of the fellowship year by November 15, 2023, and must include the name of the institution in the International Fellowship application. While acceptance is not required at the time of application, fellows must include official confirmation from the institution with their award acceptance materials.
  • Master’s/first professional degree fellowships are intended for master’s or professional degree-level programs such as J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., or medical degrees such as M.D., D.D.S., etc. Certificates, associate degrees, and undergraduate degrees are not eligible.
  • Doctoral fellowships are meant for doctoral degrees designated as research degrees, such as Ph.D. or Ed.D.
    Postdoctoral applicants must show verification of their doctorate degree; hold a doctorate classed as a research degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., D.M.) or an M.F.A. before November 15, 2023; and identify where they will conduct their research.
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctorate applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. approved institution in the United States during the fellowship year.
  • A limited number of prizes are offered to Graduate Women International members for study or research in countries other than their own. It should be noted that foreign branches of US institutions are considered outside of the US.
  • Applicants may apply for the fellowship in any year of their program, but they must be pursuing a full year of study or research. International Fellowships do not cover the cost of a partial year of study or research. Programs that terminate before April of the fellowship year are not eligible.

Fellowship Benefits

Applicants for AAU International Fellowships for Graduate and Postgraduate Students will receive the following fellowship funds:

  • Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000.
  • Doctorate: $25,000.
  • $50,000 for postdoctoral work.
  • Education costs.
  • Living expenditures.
  • Dependent child care.
  • Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars that does not exceed 10% of the fellowship total.
