The Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany is the patron of the fellowship program. Each year, up to 60 German Chancellor Fellowships are awarded, ten from each country.

If you want to be a part of an international network of committed leaders, come to Germany with a German Chancellor Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to advance your career. The fellowship will enable the successful fellow to carry out a self-selected project that will help their career development.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the German Chancellor Fellowship 2023:

  • Have demonstrated initial leadership experience in a field such as politics, business, media, administration, society, or culture.
  • Have you completed your first academic degree (Bachelor’s or comparable degree) within the last twelve years? The key date for calculating this twelve-year period is October 1st of the year in which the selection is made.
  • Want to carry out an independently developed project in Germany with a host of your choice?
  • hold citizenship in Brazil, China, India, Russia, South Africa, or the United States and have a good command of English and/or German

Fellowship Benefits

  • Depending on your training and career level, you will receive a monthly fellowship grant of 2,000 euros, 2,300 euros, or 2,600 euros.
  • Individual support during your stay in Germany, as well as an intensive language course prior to the start of your fellowship.
  • Additional financial assistance, such as for accompanying family members, travel expenses, full private health insurance, or a second German language course.
  • Joint events where you can engage in professional and personal intercultural exchange with fellows from your year group while learning about German culture and society.
  • Networking activities that allow the fellow to collaborate in peer groups and organize smaller network formats independently with other fellows.
  • A two-week study tour of Germany, as well as a number of events where you can meet fellows and representatives from German businesses and institutions.
  • Extensive alumni sponsorship, particularly to support long-term connections with your German cooperation partners over the course of your professional career.

How-to-Apply

Interested applicants for the German Chancellor Fellowships 2023 should apply online and include the following documents:

  • Motivation letter: Explain your previous leadership experience, motivation, and career objectives.
  • Project strategy: Before applying, outline the project you created and agreed on with your intended host.
  • Extensive statement from your German host, including mentoring agreement
  • Two letters of recommendation (no older than 12 months) from people who can provide information about your professional, personal, and/or academic background
  • Applicants should be aware that the online application form includes links for uploading letters of recommendation and statements. Please forward these links to the appropriate people as soon as possible. As soon as all of the required documents are received, applicants will receive a confirmation e-mail.
