The Leibniz Institute of European History is currently awarding Fellowships for doctoral research studies in Germany. These are open to PhD students from Germany and abroad who have at least a Masters degree in history, theology, or another historical discipline.

They must have been working on their doctorate for no more than three years at the time they apply for the fellowship, though exceptions may be made in exceptional cases. At the end of the funding period, fellows must submit a final report on their project.

The Institute does not hold exams or award academic degrees because it is a research institution that is not affiliated with a university. Dissertations are completed at the home university under the supervision of the fellowship holder’s supervisor.

The fellowships are only used to carry out the research project described in the application at the IEG.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for these IEG Fellowships, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • International students must apply.
  • Candidates must be doctoral students.
  • Applicants must commit to a full-time program.
  • Dissertations are completed at the home university under
  • the supervision of the fellowship holder’s supervisor.

Fellowship rates (as of January 1, 2019)

The federal and state governments jointly fund the IEG Fellowships. The fellowships are only used to carry out the research project described in the application at the IEG. As a result, no other employment or funding can be pursued or obtained during

The IEG Fellowship for doctoral students is worth € 1,350 per month.

Allowance for family
Fellowship holders whose partners accompany them to Mainz and have a monthly income of less than 450 euros may be eligible for a family allowance. Please indicate in your application whether you will be accompanied to Mainz by a partner.

Fellows who come to Mainz with their minor children may apply for a child allowance.

Concerning the Fellowship Application

Attachments are listed in the following order:

  • The filled-out application form
  • Curriculum vitae and publication list (if applicable) (Please do not send pictures)
  • A synopsis of the Ph.D. thesis (up to 15,000 characters excluding footnotes and spaces)
  • The format of the Ph.D. thesis
  • A detailed schedule for the Institute’s intended stay
  • Copies of university transcripts and evidence of language proficiency
