Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer’s fascination in Africa began in the mid-1990s, when she relocated to Zimbabwe with Jonathan Oppenheimer. They went to South Africa in 1999, and she quickly made it her home. In her honor, the JWO Research Grant was established. The grant will allow her to continue her service to Africa, the environment, and pioneering science. The grant’s goal is to help early-career scientists perform important research that will lead to solutions to some of Africa’s most pressing problems.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the JWO Research Grant:

  • Applicants must be early career scientists with a PhD and no more than seven years of post-degree job and/or research experience (excluding time used for family commitments).
  • Have strong ties to an African institution. The institution should have a proven ability to handle funding and adhere to good financial grant practice, and it can be any of the following: an academic institution, a research institution, a government institution, a non-profit organization, or a for-profit corporation.

What Judges Are Looking For

  • Expands the boundaries of knowledge in the selected field.
  • Aids in the resolution of African problems: The research should attempt to solve an African problem that happens across several geographies and is scalable to additional locations. Multiple research sites should be included in the study.
  • Innovative methodologies and approaches are demonstrated. Scientific rigor and quality are evident.
  • Contributes to the next generation of researchers’ human capital development (e.g., mentorship, assistance, and professional development opportunities).
  • Incorporates a holistic viewpoint and encompasses inter- and multi-disciplinary collaboration with partners (preferentially intra-African) to harness time, experience, skills, materials, and resources while reducing duplication.
  • Describes the potential for impact both during and after the grant period.
  • Knowledge about related recent or current work on the continent.
  • Establishes a defined strategy for sharing research findings both within and outside the scientific community.
  • Attempts to make open access articles (both popular and scientific) available.
  • There is no intolerable ethical or safety risk.
