The National Identity Management Commission issues the Nigerian National Identification Number (NIN), which is a unique identification number (NIMC). Every Nigerian is expected to be enrolled and issued a NIN for the purpose of all-around identification. This number has recently, and possibly in the near future, been linked to all individual activities, including banking transactions.

We have outlined practical methods for retrieving and linking your National Identification Number (NIN) via the USSD code on major network operators or other online platforms in this post.

The Federal Government had previously issued an ultimatum to telecommunication operators through the Nigerian Communications Commission ) (NCC) to block all unregistered SIM cards, which was eventually followed by the major operators. To avoid disconnection and keep your line operational, ensure that you have followed the procedures for connecting your line to your National Identification Number (NIN).

Registration for a National Identification Number.

It is critical for those who have yet to enroll in the NIMC’s NIN to do so in order to have their line linked. To become registered;

  • For enrolment forms and guidelines, go to the online pre-enrolment portal.
  • You can get the NIMC registration form by clicking on this link or.
  • Simply walk into any NIMC enrolment center across the country.
  • Other licensed agents can help you register (ask around your neighborhood).

Please keep in mind, that only one registration is required to receive both the NIMC card and the NIN. However, the 11-digit National Identification Number (NIN) is not the same as the physical National e-ID Card. Without the e-ID card, the NIN can be used to verify digital identity.

Enrollment Centers for NIMC

There are designated centers throughout the country and in foreign countries where you can easily register and enroll for NIN. To locate NIMC enrolment Centers near you, go to the NIMC website and select your state or Diaspora location for a comprehensive list of centers throughout the country.

NIN Registration Requirements

To enroll as an adult, go to your nearest NIMC Enrolment Centre with your BVN and any of the following Original and Valid supporting documents:

  • Old National ID Card
  • Driver’s License
  • Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent)
  • Nigerian International passport
  • Certificate of Origin
  • A letter of attestation from a prominent ruler in your community
  • Birth certificate
  • Age declaration
  • Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader
  • NHIS ID card
  • Government staff ID card
  • Staff ID card for a registered/recognized private organization.
  • School ID Card (private/public)
  • Tax Clearance certificate
  • Genuine immigration documents

How to Get Your NIN Number Via USSD

Follow these simple steps to find your NIN number:

  • Dial *346# from any phone on any network.
  • To select NIN Retrieval Option, enter ‘1’. (if the phone number you are dialing from was used during your NIN registration).
  • Enter ‘2’ to select the NIN Search option (if you have lost your number; you will be required to input some of your registration details)
  • Congratulations on your recovery.
  • The next step is to connect your NIN to your line; procedures vary depending on the operator.

MTN customers can connect their NIN to their line in one of three ways.

  • Online registration is available at NIN Information Center (mtn.ng)
  • Dial *785# for USSD code or
  • Download myMTNApp from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  • Enter your name, phone number, NIN, and email address into the NIN linking form.
  • As soon as you’re done, submit.
  • Wait for feedback from MTN network.

Airtel customers have two options for linking their NIN;

  • Option 1:Go to www.airtel.com.ng/nin/ and click on the online registration link.
  • Option 2: On your Airtel line, dial *121*1# to submit your NIN
  1. Type 1 for “NIN Capture” and send.
  2. Send after entering your 11-digit NIN.
  3. Wait for the confirmation message to arrive.
  4. If you receive an error, simply wait a few moments and try again.

There are also two options for connecting NIN to your 9mobile line;

  • Option 1: To submit your information, dial *200*8# and follow the prompts.
  • Option 2: is to go to 9mobile.com.ng/nin  to submit online
  1. Select ‘Verify and Link your NIN Now.
  2. Fill out the necessary information and submit it.

To connect NIN to your Glo line, you can do one of two things:

  • Fill out your information and link on the online registration portal at www.gloworld.com/ng/nin. Or.
  • To submit your information, dial *109*your NIN# (for example, *109*90123456789#) and follow the prompts. Or.
  • Text your 11-digit NIN number to 109 (e.g., 90123456789 to 109) and wait for a response.

NIN Retrieval without a Phone Number.

If you have lost your phone number (which you used during NIN enrollment) and the temporary NIMC slip, try the following steps to retrieve your NIN.

  • Dial the general retrieval code (*346#) and enter your current phone number associated with your BVN.
  • Try using the NIMC Mobile app, you can download from the NIMC website or the Google Play store.
  • To print your NIN slip with the QR code and view your mobile, go to nimc.gov.ng.
  • If none of the above work, go to any NIMC office near you to speak with an official who can assist you.
