The Fifth Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif) PhD Scholarships Call for Rwandan and Nigerian Nationals is currently open for submissions from adequately qualified applicants who want to receive international-quality PhD training and conduct PhD research in a PASET Priority Thematic Area.

It is supported by African countries, the World Bank, and the Korean government, and is facilitated through the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Partnership for Skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology (PASET) is an African-led effort that aims to develop skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology in order to accelerate socioeconomic transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Rsif aspires to train high-quality PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to fill the human resource shortage for highly trained specialists in applied sciences, engineering, and technology (ASET), as well as to contribute to the improvement of research and innovation capacities in SSA. Rsif also funds the development of research and innovation ecosystems at selected African Host Universities (AHU) through competitive grants. Rsif promotes education, research, and innovation across five priority thematic areas:

  • Big data and artificial intelligence are examples of ICT.
  • Agribusiness and food security.
  • Minerals, mining, and materials engineering are all fields of study.
  • Climate change and energy, including renewables.

Rsif’s precise goals are as follows:

  • Create a pool of highly skilled ASET scientists, professionals, and innovators.
  • Identify and develop young brilliant Africans who want to continue their education in ASET subjects where expertise is most needed.
  • Address disparities in the number of women and disadvantaged groups in African ASET fields.
  • Increase the capacity of African universities to provide relevant ASET training and to secure ongoing investment in expanding ASET education and workforce.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must complete the following requirements to be eligible for the Fifth Rsif PhD Scholarships Call for Rwandan and Nigerian Nationals:

  • Candidates must Be a Rwandan and a Nigerian citizen.
  • Possess a master’s degree in one of the disciplines of study.
  • Meet the admission standards of the Rsif African Host University where they want to study a PhD.
  • Preference will be given to applicants under the age of 35.
  • Be willing to enroll full-time in a PhD program at a Rsif AHU during the academic year 2023-2024.
  • When applying for the Rsif PhD grant, you should not be holding another PhD scholarship.
  • Be prepared to spend 6-12 months in a’sandwich’ training program at a global partner university, research institute, or private company.
  • Demonstrate that their research objectives are closely matched with the Rsif Priority Thematic Areas and contribute to the development of Africa.

Scholarship Benefits.

The following perks will be available to RSIF PhD Scholars:

  • The Rsif PhD Scholarship includes university tuition and fees, a competitive stipend for living expenses, travel, medical insurance, and research expenditures.
  • PhD researchers from Rsif will be funded to spend 6-12 months in a’sandwich’ training program in an international partner university, research institute, or private company.
  • Rsif PhD researchers join an expanding network of SSA’s emerging experts in ASET domains.
  • After completing their PhD, Rsif PhD scholars will be eligible for Rsif competitive research funding.
