The Kofi Annan Foundation’s Women & Youth in Democracy Program 2023

Under the European Union-funded “Women and Youth in Democracy” project, the Kofi Annan Foundation, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and the Oslo Center are  therefore, seeking nominations for young leaders from all sectors, including civil society, politics, business, social media, and the arts.
Young leaders between the ages of 18 and 35 who likewise have a demonstrated interest in and record of working on issues linked to democracy, accountability, transparency, and youth involvement in Sub-Saharan Africa are being sought for by the Kofi Annan Foundation’s Women & Youth in Democracy Program 2023.
The European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) is undertaking the European Union-funded project “Women and Youth in Democracy” to address these issues and encourage youth involvement in public affairs. The Kofi Annan Foundation, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and the Oslo Center are looking for young leaders to join the EPD for the project’s third pillar, which aims to increase youth participation in democracy and decision-making.
Organizations can nominate one or more young leaders in their network who fit the requirements.

Purpose

They encourage submissions for young leaders who can reach a large number of young people through their work in various spheres, including civil society, politics, business, social media, and the arts. The chosen people will participate in one of two “Accountability Hubs” that will be formed in Francophone West Africa and Anglophone East Africa, respectively, and will carry out a number of tasks to:

  • Improve their own leadership skills through a focused, all-encompassing training and mentoring curriculum; Get funds and training to design, create, and implement projects in local communities; Enhance understanding of the significance of accountability within democratic processes.
  • Create regional networks of youth tackling related challenges with comparable values.
  • Use the experience and knowledge they have in common to create a toolkit of initiatives that they and other young people may use in their communities.

Selection Criteria

A wide range of organisations working on young inclusion, youth involvement, and/or democracy and leadership challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa will get information of the call for nominations.

  • At the time of nomination, nominees must be between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Must live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • They must be able to demonstrate a history of involvement in matters including leadership, youth participation, accountability, or something comparable.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken French or English.
  • Online training availability: Candidates should equally be able to actively participate in training and mentoring sessions online from May through September 2023. For some project components, the activities total about 0.5 days per week plus additional independent learning. To concentrate and participate actively in online meetings, nominees need access to the Internet, a computer, and a conducive working environment. If necessary, a modest financial donation (such as the fee of using an Internet café or library) is made to help increase Internet access on a case-by-case basis.
  • Candidates must be willing to travel in order to attend a one-week in-person “Learning and Networking Event” in either November 2023 for English-speaking candidates or February 2024 for French-speaking candidates.

The Women and Youth in Democracy Initiative of The Kofi Annan Foundation has the following requirements for nominations

• A thorough letter of support from the nominating organisation, written in no more than 500 words, outlining why they believe the young leader would be a wonderful match for the training programme and how they could contribute.
• The duly filled nomination form, attached, detailing the nominee’s leadership activities and involvement in the community in support of democracy and youth participation. The application can also include additional content, such as a podcast, video, press interview, or blog.
Please be aware that:

    • Candidates must be willing to participate in public activities associated with the project, including social media activities. As well as give prior consent for the submission of their names.
      • The nominating organizations must submit nominations and supporting materials to WYDE@kofiannanfoundation.org.
      •  Furthermore, the deadline for nominations is Friday, March 10, 2023, at 5:00 PM UTC.
